‘A Designer’s Universe’ celebrates work of Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard was one of the most influential interior and textile designers of the 20th century.  He held close relationships with such contemporaries as Charles & Ray Eames, Ero Saarinen, Andy Warhol and Rudi Gernreich.  He was a prolific collector of folk art, amassing a catalog of more than one hundred thousand pieces over decades.

Now, the Vitra Design Museum in Germany has brought an astounding collection of Girard’s work to the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe with “Alexander Girard: A Designer’s Universe.” The show features an archive of Girard’s textiles, furniture, sculptures, sketches and collages are never shown before.  They are part of a larger gift to the Design Museum given after the designers passing.

The show runs in concert with MOIFA’s permanent exhibition, “Multiple Visions”, which features more than 10,000 pieces of folk art from Girard’s personal collection, gifted to the Santa Fe Museum in the late 1970s.
